Racing for years, Rick Yacoucci discovered land speed racing in June of 1998 competing at Muroc with his turbocharged 1990 Suzuki GSXR1100. In September 1998 he earned membership with the El Mirage 200MPH Club with a 204.626mph record that was also the fastest bike of the year. In 1999, running a Suzuki GSXR and a brand new Hayabusa, he set 2 records at Muroc, 6 records at El Mirage and 1 record at Bonneville earning life membership in the Bonneville 200MPH Club riding the Hayabusa to a new 201.416 record in the production class . It was the first 200MPH Hayabusa to do so. Later, running his fastest record of the year at 203.954mph, he was the fastest motorcycle of the year
Yacoucci was only getting started and for the next decade speed records would be his each year. They include:
2000 - Suzuki GSXR and Hayabusa he set two records at Muroc, 8 records at El Mirage and one record at Bonneville, SCTA Points Champion with the Hayabusa and #2 with the GSXR, El Mirage 200MPH Club “Wrench of the Year,” Fastest Bike of the Year at 216.372MPH.
2001 – Suzuki GSXR and Hayabusa, he set 7 records at El Mirage and 2 records at Bonneville. With the Hayabusa, he earned the SCTA Points Championship with the Hayabusa; his fastest record was 220.553 on the normally aspirated Hayabusa.
2002 – Yacoucci switched to cars and started running #988 Nebulous Theorem II streamliner powered by an unblown Hayabusa engine. The car set 6 records at El Mirage in fuel and gas streamliner classes in the “G” and “H” engine sizes. The fastest dirt record was 212.590mph. The car set 3 records at Bonneville in fuel and gas streamliner with “H” engine and the fastest record was 289.416mph. SCTA Points Champion, this time in the car division and El Mirage 200MPH Club “Wrench of the Year”
2003 – Still running 988 streamliner Yacoucci was again the SCTA Points Champion and set 3 records at El Mirage in H/BFS, H/BGS, I/BFS classes and 2 at Bonneville in I/BFS, I/BGS, with a blown destroked to 1000cc Hayabusa engine. Entered the 300MPH chapter of the Bonneville 200MPH Club with a 313.984 record.
2004 – set 3 El Mirage records in I/BGS, G/BGS and 1 at Bonneville in H/BGS. The fastest record was 331.133
2005 – set 5 El Mirage records in G/BGS, G/BFS. Fastest record: 258.688. SCTA Points Champion and El Mirage 200MPH Club “Wrench of the Year”. 2006 – set 5 El Mirage records in G/BFS, G/BGS including the one set pulling the infamous “trailer” in f class. He set 2 records at Bonneville G/BGS, G/BFS, with the fastest record of 352.525mph. SCTA Fastest Car of the Year and SCTA Seasons Fastest Driver. 2007 – set 4 El Mirage records in J/BFS, J/BGS using 1/2 of a Hayabusa engine (2 pistons) and 2 records at Bonneville J/BFS, J/BGS, with our fastest record of 269.264.
2008 – Teamed up with Jimmy Stevens to contest flathead records. The pair set 2 El Mirage records in B/GS, XF/FS, and 1 record at Bonneville in XF/FS. The fastest record was 236.337 in XF/FS
2009 – Teamed again with Stevens, they set 3 El Mirage records in XF/GS, F/GS, B/GS and 3 Bonneville records in XF/GS, XF/FS, F/GS. The fastest record was 280.023 in XF/FS. 2010 – Teamed with Stevens set 4 El Mirage records in XF/GS, XF/BFS and SCTA Fastest Car of the Year with 238.937 record.
Yacoucci “took a break” in 2011 resuming racing in 2012 teaming with Mike Waters to set 3 El Mirage records in E/FS, E/GS, C/FS. SCTA Fastest Car of the Year with 258.024 record in c/fs. El Mirage 200MPH Club “Wrench of the Year” and SCTA Fastest Car of the Year and SCTA Seasons Fastest Driver.
To date, he has recorded 77 land speed records with motorcycles and cars. There is no end in sight. Stay tuned.
